Cellnex takes over Media Gateway Hilversum

Utrecht/Hilversum, November 15, 2021 – Cellnex, Europe’s largest independent telecommunications infrastructure, has taken over the Media Gateway datacenter in Hilversum from Red Bee Media as per November 12. The takeover fits within Cellnex’s growth strategy, which involves both portfolio expansion and providing extended new services.

One of the main mediahubs in the Netherlands

The Media Gateway datacenter in Hilversum covers 1400 m² and is a colocation and connectivity datacenter for a large number of public and commercial broadcasters and other media and telecom companies. The datacenter also provides access to all Red Bee hubs and services around the world and all major datacenters across Europe. In addition, it has direct connections to major providers, telecom operators and ISPs as well as a growing number of football stadiums, television studios and event venues.

Maximum connectivity

Cellnex Netherlands already offers datacenter services in 24 high-rise telecom & data towers that are geographically spread across the Netherlands. Robin Verlangen, Commercial Director at Cellnex Netherlands: “The Media Gateway datacenter is a valuable addition to our current edge datacenter portfolio. Its central location, close to Amsterdam, combined with its excellent connectivity possibilities, is extremely attractive to our current customers as well as national and international companies. Especially for organisations with a high demand for connectivity and storage capacity. Moreover, there is still room for growth, which is quite unique in the Amsterdam region, especially in these times of scarcity.“

Data-ecosystem

Moreover, the acquisition is completely in line with Cellnex’s long-term vision, in which the entire data ecosystem is central. Ed Boerema, Managing Director Cellnex Netherlands: “Our telecom infrastructure is essential for the services of mobile telecom operators and broadcasting operators. With the current digital transformation, however, it is becoming increasingly crucial not only to transport data safely and quickly, but also to store, process and access it. The Media Gateway datacenter is an important link in this entire data ecosystem.”

Red Bee continues to deliver services through Media Gateway

Although Cellnex is acquiring The Media Gateway, Red Bee will still continue to use the datacenter as part of delivering its media services. “The acquisition of the Media Gateway by Cellnex aligns well with Red Bee’s overall strategic direction, where we continue to focus on our core activities, evolving our cloud-based platforms and software-enabled services and continuing to establish strategic vendor relationships,” explains Thijs Bakx, Head of Market Operations Benelux at Red Bee. “As an experienced datacenter provider, Cellnex will deliver the high standards and reliability we need to provide our mission critical services to broadcasters and media companies in the Netherlands and internationally.“
